Senate Judiciary Committee Includes At Least Seven Gun Owners

* At least seven of 18 committee members own guns
* Senator Leahy was champion marksman in college
* Senator Sessions has about a dozen firearms

WASHINGTON, Jan 30 (Reuters) - Republican Senator Lindsey Graham keeps an AR-15 at home, a semi-automatic rifle similar to the weapon used recently in the mass shooting at a Newtown, Connecticut, school. But he is far from the only U.S. lawmaker who has a gun.
At least seven of the 18 members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which is considering gun-control legislation, own firearms, according to senators and their staffs.
Among bills before the committee is a proposal to ban the manufacture of firearms like the AR-15. Four members of the panel do not own firearms, while spokesmen for the other seven declined to comment or did not respond to queries.
Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, was a champion marksman in college and has a sizeable collection of long guns and handguns. The panel's senior Republican, Chuck Grassley, was given an old 22-caliber rifle by his father that he keeps on his farm in Iowa, aides said.
Graham, a member of the U.S. Air Force Reserves, is the only member of the panel who has acknowledged having an AR-15, a lightweight civilian version of the military M-16 rifle.
Most of the weapons characterized as "assault weapons" are variants of the AR-15, said Adam Winkler, a law professor at University of California-Los Angeles and author of "Gunfight: The Battle over the Right to Bear Arms in America."
"I have an AR-15 at home and I haven't hurt anybody and I don't intend to do it," Graham declared on Wednesday at a Judiciary Committee hearing. It was the first to deal with gun violence since a gunman last month killed 26 people at a Newtown elementary school, including 20 children. Graham opposes reinstating a ban on assault weapons.
The conservative South Carolina Republican did not explain why he had the weapon, but said such a gun could be useful for protection if lawlessness or rioting broke out in his neighborhood.
"I think I would be better off protecting my business or my family if there was law-and-order breakdown in my community, people roaming around my neighborhood, to have the AR-15, and I don't think that makes me an unreasonable person," Graham said.
The Bushmaster rifle, which police have said was the weapon used in the Newtown shootings, is often referred to as an AR-15, although it is not manufactured by ArmaLite, the original maker of the AR-15, Winkler said.
"AR-15 has become shorthand for this style of rifle. Gun enthusiasts don't like the term 'assault weapon,' so AR-15 has become the shorthand," Winkler said.
Some AR-15-type weapons were barred by the assault weapons ban that was U.S. law for a decade until it expired in 2004, but others were not, Winkler said.
Legislation proposed by Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein would ban the manufacture of AR-15s along with other semi-automatic rifles that can accept a detachable magazine and have at least one military feature like a pistol grip.
It excludes weapons that are already legally owned, so if it passed, Graham could keep his gun.
That is not the only gun Graham owns. As a hunter and outdoorsman, he owns about a dozen firearms, his spokesman said. Another Southern Republican on the Judiciary Committee, Jeff Sessions of Alabama, has a similar number.
"I haven't hunted in years, but I have through inheritance and other things, probably a dozen shotguns and stuff," Sessions told Reuters in a Capitol hallway earlier this month.

"I've got an old lever-action rifle my grandfather had, and the shotguns that my father had and my uncles had for some reason have fallen to me," Sessions said.
Republican Senators John Cornyn of Texas and Orrin Hatch of Utah are also gun owners, and a Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, Sheldon Whitehouse, said he had some shotguns.
"I've been taking my kids clay-pigeon shooting since they were very little. And I'm proud to say that my daughter actually shot for her college skeet and trap team," Whitehouse, who is from Rhode Island, told Reuters outside the Senate last week.
He said he did not think that would affect his decision-making on gun legislation in the Judiciary Committee.
"I think our focus is going to be in particular ... these high-capacity magazines, which have really no legitimate sporting or target practice, recreational use," Whitehouse said.
As for Feinstein, she said used to have a gun in the 1970s, when she was a target of a militant group called the New World Liberation Front.
"They shot out windows at my beach house, and they put a bomb at my home in San Francisco," Feinstein told Reuters. "That's when I carried a permitted concealed weapon for a period of time."
But Feinstein said it was in a holster in her purse and she thought she would probably not be able to get to it in time if she needed it. "And then I began to see really how little these guns are used for self-defense," she said. "I haven't had one for decades."
Even if lawmakers own guns legally at home, it is apparently not so easy to bring them into the Capitol complex. Graham said he had wanted to bring various unloaded firearms to the hearing in a Senate office building on Wednesday for "education" purposes.
But he was told he had to follow protocol. "The requirements to secure the weapons at the hearing are so impractical as to be unworkable," Graham said in a statement. Facebook?s Mobile App Ads See Early Traction With 20% Of iOS? 100 Top Grossing Devs Using Them

About one-fifth of iOS’ top grossing developers are testing out Facebook app install ads, showing some early traction for the new product. Sheryl Sandberg, the company’s COO, mentioned this on today’s fourth quarter earnings call. Launched last fall, Facebook launched new kind of ad unit that doesn’t involve a friends’ like or recommendation. These ads send users to the iOS app store, where they can download promoted apps. They’re going to be an important prong of Facebook mobile monetization efforts. Why? Facebook can’t derive fees or virtual currency revenue from mobile apps, because they exist on platforms operated by the company’s frenemies Google and Apple. As users have migrated to mobile devices, Facebook’s payments revenues has stalled because of this. “We continue to face headwinds in payments revenue, since our games revenue is essentially from desktop computers,” said Facebook’s CFO David Ebersman on today’s earnings call. So mobile ads are going to be the key way that the company earns revenue from its developer ecosystem on mobile devices. Given that Facebook reaches 680 million users every day on mobile devices, it really isn’t surprising at all that a significant fraction of top developers are testing this out. Early anecdotal feedback from developers I’ve talked to has been mixed, but many developers acknowledge that it will be an important user acquisition channel in the future. Anil Dharni, who is a senior vice president at the $3.5 billion Japanese mobile gaming company GREE, told me in an interview last week (which I have yet to publish) that, “Some of the test results that are coming in are pretty good actually. They’re really premium spots and the ROI is definitely there.” He said it will almost certainly be one of the top handful of marketing channels the company uses going forward. Perry Tam, who is the CEO of Storm8, a game developer that sees 10 million users every day, told us last month that Facebook campaigns were four times as effective as other channels in acquiring users with “exceptional” conversion rates. (It’s worth noting though that Tam is a former Facebooker, who left the company to start Storm8.) It’s quite common for any single one of top 50 grossing iOS developers at to spend at least a few million dollars every month on user acquisition. Accessible tourism and dementia

Jan. 29, 2013 ? Researchers are planning new ways of making tourist attractions dementia-friendly.

Fear of getting lost, fear of not finding the toilets or being misunderstood; there are many reasons why people with dementia and the families who care for them stop going on holiday.

For people with dementia, even simple days out can pose a host of hazards. Often, families say, it's easier to just stay at home. But Bournemouth University's newly launched Dementia Institute hopes to change that.

"We have a vision," says Professor Anthea Innes of the BU Dementia Institute (BUDI), "that perhaps in the future, Bournemouth might become a dementia-friendly tourist resort." An expert in health and social care research, Professor Innes is collaborating with Professor Stephen Page of BU's School of Tourism to launch pioneering research into dementia-friendly tourism -- developing venues where people with dementia will feel safe and at ease to enjoy themselves.

Encouraged by a government pledge to create 20 dementia-friendly cities, towns and villages by 2015, Professor Innes is working closely with those who need these facilities most.

"Our aim is to see how tourism can respond to the needs of people with dementia and their carers and find out if and why they haven't been able to access tourist attractions and leisure facilities," she says. "We hope to increase their use of tourist attractions, accommodation and resorts in the South of England."

While an exploratory pilot scheme will take place locally, Professor Innes hopes to expand the research to international, as well as UK, facilities. "Lots of work is currently going into dementia-friendly communities -- safe cashpoints, trained staff and police for instance -- but we are the only people looking specifically at leisure and tourism," she says.

Her initial focus groups with families of people with dementia will feed into research into voluntary organisations, NHS services and businesses themselves. BUDI plans to develop training to shape professional dementia care in the region. In the course of its research, BUDI's team will also interview the many tourist attractions that make up Bournemouth's seaside resort, such as the Oceanarium and venues such as tearooms, galleries, theatres and museums.

Dorset is home to one of the largest ageing populations in England and is a good place to start. Dorset also has the lowest rate of dementia diagnosis in the country, but not because of a shortage of people with the disease. Professor Innes estimates just one in four people with dementia in Dorset have actually been diagnosed.

"That's a shocking statistic. In other areas of the country about half the people with dementia are diagnosed, and if you don't have a diagnosis, you won't be able to access services and support. You might end up in a crisis situation because you and your family have not been able to plan for the future," she says.

Sometimes GPs are reluctant to give a diagnosis due to a lack of local services. A dementia label can also carry a stigma with families and communities -- meaning people are reluctant to admit a problem, and doctors might be unaware of the level of care available. Sometimes elderly people will already be in care homes, but labelled as 'pleasantly muddled,' rather than receiving a formal diagnosis.

A strong business case also exists for improving tourist facilities. Experts predict numbers of people with dementia will double over the next 30 years -- currently the disease costs the UK economy an estimated ?19 billion.

"If somewhere is labelled as dementia-friendly, it's good for the industry and people involved. Staff will be better trained and more aware -- and that's good for levels of service overall," says Professor Innes.

Graham threatens to block Hagel pick over Libya

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Republican senator is threatening to block the nomination of Chuck Hagel to lead the Pentagon unless Defense Secretary Leon Panetta testifies about the deadly assault on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said in an interview with Fox News' "On the Record" Monday night that he would "absolutely" block the nomination until Panetta explains why the military wasn't called in during the raid.

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died in the attack last September. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton testified for more than five hours last Wednesday before the House and Senate on the attack in Benghazi.

Graham has been critical of President Barack Obama's choice of former Republican Sen. Hagel.

I mean, really thought about everything you save so that it's always at your fingertips??

Then think about how well protected that information is.

You may not care if your list of favorite wines goes public, but what if someone were to copy your spouse?s driver?s license and Social Security numbers?

Millions of people have such data stored in their smartphones or tablets. Because mobile devices are so easy to lose or have stolen, all data on them is at substantial risk.

With Android devices, there's additional danger. They've been plagued by shoddy security and malicious apps.

Cybercrooks are getting bolder and more creative with those apps every day. Just as you think you're one step ahead of the crooks, they come up with a new way to steal your personal information.

That?s why it's vital for every Android user to learn how to lock down and protect his or her device.

Keep out the digital thieves
Right now, malicious apps, which often pretend to be cheaper versions of popular apps or games, are the No. 1 risk for Android devices.

"Malicious applications targeted for Android devices [have] increased between 400 to 1,000 percent in the past 18 to 24 months," said Jerry Irvine, chief information officer of Prescient Solutions in Schaumburg, Ill.

"These malicious applications perform multiple tasks, but share one common goal ? to attain the personal information on these mobile devices and push it out to criminal entities."

Malware can also be installed on an Android device in other ways, such as through websites, emails, text messages or even NFC (near-field communication) file transfers.

To best protect your phone from malware, Irvine said, download anti-virus and malware-scanning apps designed for Android devices.

Most of the better known anti-virus software companies have security apps available. Chances are you can stick with the brand you like best.

Be sure to upgrade the anti-virus software when prompted, since new malware is being released every day.

And the human ones
But malware isn't the only threat to the personal data on your smartphone or tablet. If the device is lost or stolen, the data's in someone else's hands.

You should consider installing a security product that regularly backs up the data on your device to a cloud-storage service ? and also has a location detector and the ability to remotely wipe personal data if the device is gone for good.

The first line of defense, however, is to protect your device with a PIN, password or pattern lock. That way, no one can randomly pick it up and start checking your email.

"Passwords and PIN configurations on mobile devices can be configured to entirely wipe the device if the password is not entered correctly within a specific number of times," Irvine said.

"The security should be configured.? Strong passwords of eight or more characters should be used because they make it much harder to crack the password."

Keep your password, PIN or lock pattern truly secret by regularly wiping your device's screen clean. Repeated finger gestures will smear the glass, leaving smudge patterns that can tip off a thief.

Theft of smartphones and tablets is on the rise. Thieves have been known to swipe phones out of the hands of users who were still talking.

While these thieves may be primarily interested in the street value of the device, your unprotected data is always going to be at risk.

Considering how we use our smartphones and tablets (and got rid of address books and other tools that held our vital numbers), it's futile to recommend keeping all personally identifiable information off our gadgets.

Instead, keep the amount of such information on your device to a minimum, and make sure your phone has multiple layers of security.

Niger gives green light to U.S. drone deployment: source

NIAMEY (Reuters) - Niger has given permission for U.S. surveillance drones to be stationed on its territory to improve intelligence on al Qaeda-linked Islamist fighters in northern Mali and the wider Sahara, a senior government source said.

The U.S. ambassador to Niger, Bisa Williams, made the request at a meeting on Monday with President Mahamadou Issoufou, who immediately accepted it, the source said.

"Niger has given the green light to accepting American surveillance drones on its soil to improve the collection of intelligence on Islamist movements," said the source, who asked not to be identified.

The drones could be stationed in Niger's northern desert region of Agadez, which borders Mali, Algeria and Libya, the source said.

A spokesperson for the United States' African Command (AFRICOM) declined to comment.

The United States already has drones and surveillance aircraft stationed at several points around Africa. Its only permanent military base is in the small country of Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, more than 3,000 miles from Mali.

After her talks with Issoufou, Williams told reporters they had discussed economic and military cooperation and development issues. She also expressed Washington's appreciation for the French-led military mission to expel an alliance of al Qaeda-linked fighters from northern Mali.

French and Malian troops retook control of the ancient trading town of Timbuktu on Monday, as they drove deep into the heart of the desert region the size of Texas seized by Islamist fighters last year.

Washington has provided military transport planes to airlift men and equipment into Mali but said it will not send combat troops.

The head of the U.S. Africa Command, General Carter Ham, visited Niger last month. The poor, landlocked West Africa state has said it wants to have closer security cooperation with Washington.

The first tornado warning of the approaching storm was issued on Tuesday for western Missouri, said meteorologist Bill Bunting at the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

A warning is intended to signal residents to take cover because a tornado could be forming. A less urgent tornado watch is in effect for a region from extreme northeast Texas through virtually all of Arkansas, western Tennessee and extreme southern Illinois.

"It's a little unusual," Bunting said of the tornado threat. "We don't see this every winter with this kind of warmth preceding a storm system."

Bunting said a lesser threat of severe storms and possible tornadoes extends over a huge area as far north as Chicago and extending east to Cincinnati, Ohio and Nashville, Tennessee and south into Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana.

"This weather system will reach its peak intensity this afternoon into the evening. It will only get stronger and cover a larger area over the next 12 to 18 hours," he said.

In Arkansas, forecasters predicted winds of up to 80 miles per hour and possible tornadoes throughout the state on Tuesday night.

The National Weather Service made a special release of weather balloons in Arkansas on Tuesday because of the threat.

The tornado threat was the latest development in a turbulent weather pattern.

Several cities set records for warmth on Monday and a few more record high temperatures were expected on Tuesday, although there were more clouds overhead to moderate temperature, Bunting said.

The high reached 74 degrees Fahrenheit in Kansas City on Monday, encouraging residents to go outside for a winter round of golf or to a park wearing shorts and flip flops.

By midmorning on Tuesday, the temperature had fallen to 43 degrees in Kansas City and was expected to fall to 28 overnight with a chance of snow.

The temperature was 61 degrees as far north as Chicago on Tuesday and the warmth extended into Indiana.

"The tornado and damaging wind threat will continue well after dark tonight," Bunting said, adding that people should be aware of the weather and be monitoring media reports.

Tornadoes are most dangerous after dark when residents are sometimes unable to see the approaching storm in time to take cover.

Obama launches push for immigration overhaul

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Seeking swift action on immigration, President Barack Obama on Tuesday will try to rally public support behind his proposals for giving millions of illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship, as well as making improvements to the legal immigration system and border security.

The president will launch his push in a campaign-style event in Las Vegas, a day after a bipartisan group of senators unveiled their own plan for addressing an issue that has languished in Washington for years.

Administration officials said Obama would largely endorse the senators' efforts, though immigration advocates said they expected the president's own proposals to be more progressive than the Senate group's, including a faster pathway to citizenship.

The simultaneous immigration campaigns were spurred by the November presidential election, in which Obama won an overwhelming majority of Hispanic voters. The results caused Republican lawmakers who had previously opposed immigration reform to reconsider in order to rebuild the party's reputation among Hispanics, an increasingly powerful political force.

Most of the recommendations Obama will make Tuesday are not new. He outlined an immigration blueprint in May 2011 but exerted little political capital to get it passed by Congress, to the disappointment of many Hispanics.

Obama "believes that we are at a moment now where there seems to be support coalescing at a bipartisan level behind the very principles that he has long put forward and behind principles that have in the past enjoyed bipartisan support," White House press secretary Jay Carney said Monday. "And that is a very positive thing."

The president was to make his pitch in Nevada, a political battleground he carried in November, in large part because of support from Hispanics in the state.

Nationally, Obama won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote, giving him a key advantage over Republican rival Mitt Romney.

Administration officials said the president would bolster his 2011 immigration blueprint with some fresh details. His original plan centered on four key areas: a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S., improved border security, an overhaul of the legal immigration system, and an easier process for businesses to verify the legal status of workers.

Administration officials said they were encouraged to see the Senate backing the same broad principles. In part because of the fast action on Capitol Hill, Obama does not currently plan to send lawmakers formal immigration legislation.

However, officials said the White House does have legislation drafted and could fall back on it should the Senate process stall. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss internal strategy.

Gay and lesbian advocates were also expecting Obama's proposals to include recognition of same-sex couples where one partner is American and another is not.

Obama's previous proposals for creating a pathway to citizenship required those already in the U.S. illegally to register with the government and submit to security checks; pay registration fees, a series of fines and back taxes; and learn English. After eight years, individuals would be allowed to become legal permanent residents and could eventually become citizens five years later.

The Senate group's pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants already in the U.S. would be contingent upon securing the border and improving tracking of people in the U.S. on visas. Linking citizenship to border security could become a sticking point between the White House and lawmakers.

The Senate framework would also require those here illegally to pass background checks and pay fines and taxes in order to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency, a critical step toward citizenship. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already waiting for a green card within the current immigration system.

Passage of legislation by the full Democratic-controlled Senate is far from assured, but the tallest hurdle could come in the House, which is dominated by conservative Republicans who've shown little interest in immigration reform.

The senators involved in formulating the immigration proposals were Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

Compensation for Philippine dictatorship victims

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? Almost four decades after he was arrested and tortured and his sister disappeared into a maze of Philippine police cells and military houses, playwright Bonifacio Ilagan is finally seeing his suffering officially recognized.

A writer for an underground communist newspaper, Ilagan and thousands like him were rounded up by dictator Ferdinand Marcos' security forces after he placed the Philippines under martial law in 1972. Detentions, beatings, harassment and killings of the regime's opponents continued until Marcos was toppled in 1986.

Even though democracy was restored, it would take another 27 years for the Philippine Congress to vote on a bill awarding compensation and recognition to martial law victims. The bill was ratified Monday and will be sent to Pres. Benigno Aquino III for signing into law, said Sen. Francis Escudero, a key proponent.

"More than the monetary compensation, the bill represents the only formal, written document that martial law violated the human rights of Filipinos and that there were courageous people who fought the dictatorship," said a statement from SELDA, an organization of former political prisoners that campaigned for the passage of the bill.

Ilagan's story is more of a rule than exception among leftist activists of his generation.

"The torture started in the house. We were beaten up, punched and kicked," he said, recalling a police raid on his residence in April 1974 and the beginning of his two-year detention ordeal. He said he vomited blood after being kicked in the thighs and had the soles of his foot burned by an iron.

"The one episode in my torture that I cannot forget was when they ordered me to remove my pants and underwear and they inserted a piece of stick into my penis. 'Oh my God,' I said, this is one torture I could not bear,'" the 61-year-old said in an interview. He said that interrogators wanted him to decode documents and identify people in pictures that were seized from suspected communist activists.

"Compared to others, mine was not the worst torture," he said. "The others were electrocuted and injected with truth serum. ... But the threats continued."

Ilagan's sister, Rizalina, disappeared in 1976 along with nine other activists, many of them students involved in anti-Marcos publications, he said. One of the women arrested by the same government unit that he suspected was involved in his sister's abduction had escaped to recount her rape and torture. Ilagan said he has no doubt that his sister went through the same abuses.

His parents died still hoping his sister would turn up alive, but the family has found no closure, Ilagan said.

Lawmakers in two chambers of the Congress agreed last week on the text of the compensation bill.

Aquino is the son of an assassinated anti-Marcos activist and a mother who led the 1986 "people power" revolt that ousted Marcos and sent him into U.S. exile, where he died three years later without ever facing prosecution for human rights abuses.

Many of Marcos' men reinvented themselves as powerful politicians or businessmen, and not one was successfully prosecuted for any of the crimes allegedly committed during the martial law years.

Two martial law figures, former Defense Secretary Juan Ponce Enrile and the deputy military chief of staff, Fidel Ramos, led a mutiny against Marcos as part of the 1986 revolt. Ramos later served as president from 1992 to 1998, and Enrile is currently the president of the Senate.

Despite cases filed by former political prisoners, "there have been no convictions of perpetrators," Marie Hilao-Enriquez, chairwoman of SELDA, said Monday.

The Marcos family, meanwhile, returned from exile in 1990s and again wields influence. Former first lady Imelda Marcos is a lawmaker, son Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcosis is a senator, and daughter Imee is a provincial governor.

"Governments after Marcos did not move or did not do anything to go after Marcos seriously, so we filed a case in Hawaii," Hilao-Enriquez said.

In 1992, victims won a class action suit against the Marcos estate in Hawaii.

Under the Human Rights Victims Reparation and Recognition Act of 2013, the 9,539 victims will be awarded compensation using $246 million that the Philippine government recovered from Marcos' ill-gotten wealth. But all claims will have to evaluated by an independent commission and the amount each will receive will depend of the abuse suffered.

"Finally, over two decades after the fall of the dictatorship, we will have a law that puts the responsibility of human rights abuses square on the shoulder of Marcos and provides justice for all those who suffered under his reign," said Rep. Walden Bello, a member of a congressional committee that drafted and approved the bill.

Dick Van Dyke: 'I don't get the comedies today'

From "Mary Poppins" to "Night at the Museum" and his own long-running TV comedy, Dick Van Dyke has done it all during a show business career spanning seven decades.

On Sunday, Van Dyke, 87, gets a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild in Los Angeles, just a year after his 1960s "Dick Van Dyke Show" co-star Mary Tyler Moore received the same honor.

Reuters spoke to Van Dyke about his career, his thoughts on today's comedies and being a newlywed in his 80s.

Q: Was it really as much fun working on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" as it seemed?
A: "It was just absolutely wonderful. (Co-star) Morey Amsterdam used to say it was like going to a party every morning. It was the perfect improv group. I think it was the best five years of all of our lives."

Q: Do you have a favorite episode?
A: "'Coast-to-Coast Big Mouth,' where Mary gives away that Alan Brady, Dick's boss (played by show creator Carl Reiner) is bald, is one that comes to mind. I tend to like the ones that I had the most fun on, and I think the one I recall immediately is 'Where Did I Come From?,' the story of Richie's birth, and all the hijinks that happen with the nervous father. A lot of crazy things happened, a lot of slapstick, which, of course, I love to do. It was a farce, but I just had so much fun on that one."

Q: How have sitcoms changed since "The Dick Van Dyke Show's" run from 1961-66?
A: "I think the big change is that 10 minutes of every 30 are commercials. We had 28 minutes to tell our story. Today they get 20 minutes. It's just a one-line joke and a canned laughter, and a one-line joke and a canned laughter. I won't say it's bad, it's just that I have trouble understanding it.

"It seems to me that relationships are what's missing. I think back to 'All in the Family,' when you knew what those relationships were and the comedy that came out of that. Today it's just one line after another, and they seem to try to cover too much in the way of story in a short time. Then I think they signal when they're trying to be funny, and the minute I catch someone trying to be funny, then I won't laugh."

Q: What do you watch on television?
A: "I have to admit, I don't get the comedies today. Maybe it's just my vintage. Actually I stick pretty much with the news, and I love 'Jeopardy!' I watch Al Jazeera. They have news that you can't find anywhere else. They do great documentaries, too."

Q: Do children tend to recognize you from your earlier roles in film classics such as "Mary Poppins" (1964), or for your more recent work in the 2006 family film "Night at the Museum"?
A: "It's just thrilling. I get little kids who recognize me from 'Mary Poppins,' and it just delights me because it's our third generation. I was in the market the other day and a woman said to her daughter, 'Honey, that's the man who played Bert.' And she ran over to her little brother and said, 'I just met Bert's grandpa!' So to be recognized by kids is just wonderful. Kids have all seen 'Mary Poppins,' almost every family has a copy of it, and the children have come up and sung all the words from the songs of 'Mary Poppins' for me. It's amazing."

Q: You're a member of the barbershop quartet, Dick Van Dyke and the Vantastix. Where do you perform?
A: "We sing mostly at fundraisers and benefits. We also sing the opening theme song from "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Morey Amsterdam wrote the lyrics, but I don't think they've ever been published. I sing with guys half my age in the group, so they keep me young. A couple years ago we sang at Ford's Theater for the president, so that was a big thrill for us."

Q: You married makeup artist Arlene Silver last February. You two met at the SAG awards seven years ago. How's married life treating you?
A: "Absolutely wonderful! She sings and dances, so there is a lot of that going on around our house. She's a joy and she just lights up my life!"

Kerry skeptical on need for more US forces in Asia

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The nominee to be America's top diplomat supports deeper ties with China and is unconvinced the U.S. needs to ramp up its military presence in the Asia-Pacific region.

Sen. John Kerry was speaking Thursday at his confirmation hearing to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton as secretary of state.

The Obama administration has made a stronger presence in Asia a foreign policy priority.

That's been welcomed by nations in the region unnerved by China's growing power and assertiveness, but has irked Beijing.

Kerry said the U.S. already has a lot more bases in the region than any other nation, including China, and augmenting them further could prompt Chinese concern of encirclement.

Kerry added that vigilance was still required and he was not suggesting retreating from "current levels."

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Fifteen-year-old murder suspect Nehemiah Griego grew up in a family deeply rooted in the Christian faith.

His father, a gang member turned pastor, helped others turn their lives around. There were missions to Mexico, prayer sessions with former jail inmates and weekly Bible study gatherings. For Griego, there were jam sessions with the Calvary Albuquerque's youth band and pickup basketball games at the church.

That all changed last Saturday when his parents and three younger siblings were slain at home and Griego was arrested and charged with the killings.

On Friday, family and friends will gather at the church to mourn the deaths ? a tragedy that just doesn't make sense to surviving family members or the church community that has watched him grow up.

Griego was just a normal teen to Vince Harrison, a former police officer who had known the family for about 10 years through his security work at the church.

"He did not fit the criteria of a kid who was crazy into guns and wanted to hurt people. That's absolutely false," Harrison said.

So how and why could something like this happen to a family like the Griegos?

The question is haunting family members and the church community as lawmakers across the country debate whether more gun control laws would keep another shooting from happening.

Public defender Jeff Buckels said Thursday that it's too early for anyone to rush to judgment about the teen's mental state, motives or plans. He said the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department has been parceling out limited bits of what he described as "the most damaging supposed 'facts.'"

"This has led directly to a multitude of sensational headlines that threaten to finish Nehemiah's case in the public mind before it has fairly begun," Buckels said.

Sheriff Dan Houston described the case as "horrific" and said Thursday that he stood by the facts as presented in the investigation.

Detectives continue to pour over evidence gathered last weekend at the Griego home. They're also reviewing text messages and calls between Griego and his 12-year-old girlfriend and security video from Calvary, where the teen apparently spent much of the day following the early morning shootings.

He is facing murder and child abuse charges in the deaths of his family. They were all found shot to death inside their rural home south of Albuquerque last Saturday.

After the killings, authorities allege that Griego reloaded his parents' two semi-automatic rifles and put them in the family van and planned to gun down Wal-Mart shoppers. Houston has said investigators have no information that Griego actually went to a Wal-Mart that day.

The defense attorney promised he will consult with mental health experts and investigate the effects of violent video games. Authorities have said Griego liked to play "Modern Warfare" and "Grand Theft Auto."

"It's far too soon to know the meaning of this tragedy and far too soon to judge," Buckels said.

Since news of the shootings first hit Calvary last Sunday, churchgoers have been praying for the teen and the victims Greg Griego, 51, his wife, Sarah Griego, 40, and three of their children ? a 9-year-old boy, Zephania Griego, and daughters Jael Griego, 5, and Angelina Griego, 2.

Friday's memorial service follows an hour-long prayer vigil that drew an estimated 2,000 people Wednesday night.

There were simply no signs, said Rick Zemke, a chaplain who knew the family and volunteered with Greg Griego at the Metropolitan Detention Center.

"They were always together. They just always seemed to click," he said. "It's hard to understand."

Apple drops supplier over underage labor violations, hails 'high compliance' with reducing excessive work hours

Apple's latest Supplier Responsibility Report has just been published, detailing 393 audits focused on the plants and suppliers that help make all that hardware. The audit number is a 72 percent increase in what it covered in its last annual report, while Apple was also quick to highlight its contracting companies' high compliance (92 percent) with a maximum 60-hour work week. Senior vice president of operations Jeff Williams told Reuters that underage workers and limiting working hours were two of the most challenging issues it faced in its supplier audits. Apple decided to end business relations with component maker Guangdong Real Faith Pingzhou Electronics over underage labour issues. "We go deep in the supply chain to find it," said Williams. "And when we do find it, we ensure that the underage workers are taken care of, the suppliers are dealt with."

Is the GOP Moving to the Center? Or Just Getting Sane?

It is no secret that President Obama plans to move the country to the left, demanding "collective action" in his inaugural address to curb global warming, to buttress the middle class, to regulate guns and ammunition, to defend Medicare and Social Security, and to extend gay rights.

The question is whether, behind the scenes, Republican leaders have recognized an opportunity to counter Obama?s liberalism with ever-so-slight jogs toward the center ? if not ideologically, at least pragmatically to a position the GOP all but abandoned in recent months: political sanity.

I ask because of two important developments:

• The GOP-controlled House passed a bill Wednesday that effectively extends the debt ceiling limit until May 19. It was a major capitulation to Obama, who publicly declared he would not negotiate with the nation?s credit held hostage. Rep. Paul Ryan, the party?s vice presidential nominee in 2012, cited the ?realities of divided government? when he urged his rank-and-file to effectively eat crow.
• Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, another likely 2016 GOP presidential candidate, is quietly and (so far) effectively lobbying conservative lawmakers and commentators to consider immigration reforms. In the not-to-distant past, Rubio?s proposals would have been fatally labeled as stalking horses for amnesty.?
• Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is expected to tell the Republican National Committee tonight that it's time for the GOP to focus less on political battles in Washington. "A debate about which party can better manage the federal government is a very small and short-sighted debate," he is expected to say, according to the Washington Post. "If our vision is not bigger than that, we do not deserve to win."

If these developments don?t represent a tentative step to the center, they are at least deep bows to reality. Polls showed that the public was braced to blame Republicans for any economic fallout over a debt ceiling fight. Election results from November underscored the GOP?s existential image problem in the fast-growing Hispanic community.

There could be something else going on here: If Obama over-estimates the amount of political capital he collected upon re-election (a common mistake for second-term presidents), he might overreach with his liberal agenda, alienate moderate and independent voters, and leave a vacuum for Republicans in the middle.

Yes, Republicans in the middle. It could happen.

In making the rounds on Capitol Hill, I?ve been struck by the recognition among GOP lawmakers that their party must adapt or perish. Some paint a broader picture, pointing out that both the Democratic and Republican parties need to be better attuned to the public will.

?The American people are not fearful of solutions to the big problems facing our country,? said Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Pa. ?They are fearful that American leaders don?t have the capacity to act.?

Failure to respond to issues like the national debt, Dent said, could force voters to seek alternatives, even an independent presidential bid. Citing the organic creation of the tea party revolt, Dent ominously added, ?The next movement to come along might not align itself with one of the two existing parties.?
