A swarm of fuzzy caterpillars infested the ranks of the Ottawa police last month.
The brownish critters ? many tinged with grey ? travelled far, finding themselves attached to the upper lips of 95 men on the force.
They came in various shapes and sizes ? full and bristly, thin and elongated.
Even Chief Charles Bordeleau wasn?t immune to the infestation.
But these unfamiliar creatures, a spawn of the Movember trend sweeping the nation, brought in a pretty penny for charity.
This year was the first time Ottawa police joined in the ?hair-raising venture? of Movember, and together raised $11,393 to help fund research into prostate cancer and mental health initiatives.
While the mo-bugs were felled by their mortal enemy ? the razor ? Saturday morning, it seems they?ll see a resurgence next year.
?It?s a lot of fun and raises money for a great cause,? said organizer Const. Ryan McEachran.
The Movember campaign is an initiative that pushes many of the values police strive for, McEachran said, putting the focus on education and prevention.
The tidy sum collected by the local cops and civilian staff ranks them fourth among 118 police services in Canada.
