I know there is software that can find the melody, sort of, in a track and silence it to create karaoke versions, but I don't think it understands the melody as much as it looks for the loudest part of the song. Accompaniment is usually mixed on the periphery and vocals all the way up front in pop music.
To take a melody and find a similar one would be an AI problem, because you'd have to have some way to know what "similar" melodies are. Other than "My Sweet Lord" (a famous pop song guilty of infringing on a melody of an obscure older song the composer had never heard of), that would be difficult.
